Another great week in Black Rock City has just flown by. This year's Burning Men festival was spectacular as usual, although I don't think anyone was expecting there to be 2 Men to burn. Enjoy the pics...

It's been so long since i last checked in. Life has been flowing so fast, from the short days of dark and cold we've propelled into the nights of lingering twilight. It was after 10pm when I biked home last night, and still the faint glow of the sun was visible on the western horizon. Tonight I was gifted this beautiful show of purples and pinks and a beautiful little grebe cruised around in the water, clearly as amazed as I.
My days in Sweden are numbered, but still one more month of lengthening days remains. I'm headed up to the Arctic Circle next month before I leave to experience the midnight sun, and apparently, obnoxious amounts of mosquitoes. I'm mainly excited about the neverending daytime. But, still a thesis to finish between now and then... back to the grind.
Had my first swedish ski experience at the best southern sweden has too offer. Unfortunately, that's not much so I spent the day giving some pointers out to some friends of mine just learning how to ski. They did great, just a few minor mishaps...
Winter came, then it left. Back to the endless melange of rain and wind, with increasingly frequent bursts of sun. Only winter I'm gonna get this season is looking back at my pictures from Italy...
A couple shots from the Italian Alps...
Finally the snow is falling. Sweden's winter has held off long enough and just laid its first blanket of the wintery white stuff on us this week. It's cold, beautiful and has brightened everyone's mood, especially mine....
Some shots from the shoreline...
The sun didn't rise today, and it wasn't around to set either. The shortest day of my life came and went in a dull haze. Sunrise: 8:30am. Sunset: 3:23. It all happened somewhere behind a thick layer of grey. But the comforting thought of the days getting longer and longer has kept me smiling all day long.
Winter has begun.
Way to go Truckee!..Had me worried for a bit there.
Here are some excerpts from an article in the Sacramento Bee...
"Under glaring eyes of state officials and environmental activists across the country, the Truckee Donner Public Utility District rejected a 50-year deal to buy electricity from a Utah coal plant.
The board's 4-1 vote late Wednesday night means the Sierra town of Truckee will continue buying energy, probably even from coal-burning plants, with short-term contracts while it scouts more environmentally friendly sources of energy for its 12,000 customers.
Truckee residents who opposed committing their community to coal power for the next two generations had allies in high places: Utility directors said they had received letters from U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, urging them to reject the deal.
In a separate letter, California Energy Commissioner B.B. Blevins warned utility directors that if the district committed to coal, it might have to pay carbon penalties once regulations authorized by the law come into effect.
The board was bombarded with messages from environmental advocates near and far, as well, said director Pat Sutton. "I received almost 3,000 e-mails in a little over 24 hours," she said.
Paul Vercruyssen, development coordinator of the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies, a Sacramento-based nonprofit, said Truckee's pivotal decision captured broad attention because it represents decisions that are being made or will be made soon by communities everywhere.
"It really was symbolic in terms of California saying, 'We are not going to buy any new coal. We are looking in other places for our energy now,' " he said."
